One Sign Fits All

Lately, Allysa’s development has been monumental. She is learning to pick up one-syllable word and can say a mean “Up” with really clear enunciation. You can feel her “peh" on your face. “Up” is used in context when she wants to be carried up from the floor so she can take a peep at what I am doing on my laptop, carry up and out from her highchair so that she can break free and run loose again or carry up and out of her cot.

Of course like a puppy who has learnt new tricks, we have been practising hard with her; making her say “up” whenever the context applies. She usually complies, gets lots of hearty responses. She smiles. We laugh. Win win situation.

Occasionally, you can hear her practising saying “up” out of randomness.

Besides mastering the art of saying her first adverb, she is learning to sign or rather gesture. Sorry folks, baby-signing is not really my thing. I figured we will figure a way to communicate with each other. One way or another.

The Wave
The first gesture she mastered was non other than the wave. Besides being a polite gesture to signify your acknowledgement to any guest or family member who is leaving the house, it’s also a sign that Allysa tells you she wants to get out of the house or “gai gai”which definitely tops her chart of her list of favourite activities to do. She is contented to just be out of the house.

Maybe I can climb and escape....wait!!!! maybe I even chew off the iron bars with my steel teeth....GNAW....

What a monumental moment it was when she did her first wave around 8-9 months. I was too ecstatic to record the exact date.

The Clap
After her First birthday, on one fine night, my baby clapped during an advertisement break. How excited Granny and I was when we saw her clapped.

Yes, we were THAT excited and showered her with praises till my girl was beaming from ear to ear.

The Nod
You can kind of see her doing the nod in her clapping video. Well, that time her nod does not contain much message but probably a sign of satisfaction or happiness from her.

----------------------------------------

Me: “Do you want milk?”

Allysa: Still in a mess of tears and shrieks

Me: “Do you want milk milk?”

Allysa: NODS vigorously

----------------------------------------------------------------

Me: “Do you want to get watch Barney?”

Allysa: Nods twice and smile. Walks and find a great spot to sit down.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Me: “Do you want to brush your teeth?”

Allysa: Nods twice, proceeds to the bathroom and climbs up her stool as she gets ready for her toothbrushing session.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, I do believe that Allysa knows what she is nodding for and she does understand that nodding does help her to successfully communicate what are her wants or needs at different times.

You might feel that my experiments are based on my biased opinions and pretty straight-forward with a sure “yes” sort of reply.

Whatever.

It does not matter even Allysa does nod when I ask if she wants to stay home the whole day because seriously, she might just want to.

So do your toddlers sign or gesture? How do you communicate with your toddlers? I would love to hear from you.

P.S: Have you “LIKED” my page?

Allysa is so cuteeee....love her chubby cheeks. I know how it feels when she now start to communicate with you thru her own sweet little ways. It so cute right.

I used to teach Ethan sign language when he was 6 months old, by 8 months, he could sign for milk and more. But that all I can get him to do. The rest is just his own customise gesture.

Have fun discovering, they are very cute at this age.

It is, Esther. It’s her cuteness that keeps me grounded and sane. Yeah...it’s really lots more fun now. The fun-ness reaches a different level now.

My 14 month old son shakes his head when he doesn't want any more food...heh. N he points to wherever he wants to go. Points to cars n say "car-car" and point to the shoe cupboard when it's time to go gai-gai. It's amazing kids this young have an opinion of their own, right? Me thinks it's a bit scary too. =p
